From 1847, the ruling families of the areas, the Martins, D’Arcys, O’Neils, all had suffered the new tax-laws and many lost all, or most of their lands.
Letterfrack did not suffer as much because of the landlord Mitchell Henry of Kylemore Abbey.
In 1881, the congested District Board was set up and found, a lot of work to do in this area. Harbours were improved, fishing boats and fishing curing stations built and local home industry and craft fostered.
The landlords were gradually bought out and the Land was given to the small farmers and laborers’ to develop.
